Cool software to keep some files safe!
March 27, 2006 – 8:09 pmHere is a cool utility that is great for keeping files secure. Truecrypt allows you to encrypt partitions as well as allowing you to create an encrypted file which you can then mount as a drive letter (or mount point). This is especially useful for portable computers which can be lost or stolen. Or work computers where you may not want your IT department sniffing around.
There are so many options you’re better off checking out the site rather than me listing them all here. But I highly recommend you checking it out if you ever worry about some of your information falling into the wrong hands.
- Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk.
- Encrypts an entire hard disk partition or a device, such as USB flash drive.
- Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.
- Provides two levels of plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password:
- 1) Hidden volume (steganography ? more information may be found here).
- 2) No TrueCrypt volume can be identified (volumes cannot be distinguished from random data).
- Encryption algorithms: AES-256, Blowfish (448-bit key), CAST5, Serpent, Triple DES, and Twofish.
- Mode of operation: LRW (CBC supported as legacy).
